About the project

The project explores the multilingual character of Banat, through the lenses of the linguistic landscape. Its main goal is to gather a team of linguists, anthropologists and historians and train them to explore the linguistic landscape of multicultural areas, both from a synchronic and diachronic perspective. The project employs the different academic competencies of the Serbian and German participants, enabling the cooperation of two scientific institutions on a highly interdisciplinary level.

As a result of this interdisciplinary work, the project will promote a better understanding of the interaction of historical, social and linguistic factors that support Banat’s multilingualism. As well, the project aims to create a new, innovative methodology for the study of the linguistic landscape, which differs from the classical ones in several respects, and which could be further applied to the study of other multilingual areas of the world.

Aims

The specific objectives of the project are:

1) forming a joint team of Serbian and German researchers, based on their specific knowledge and competencies,
2) joint field research of the Serbian and German teams,
3) creating an online database of visual material,
4) publishing a series of co-authored papers in peer-reviewed journals.

The online database of visual material will include photographs of public signage taken during the field research of Banat, as well as archival material from state, church and personal archives. Part of the collected material is already deposited and available in the Digital Archive of SASA: https://dais.sanu.ac.rs/handle/123456789/10741

Financing and duration

The project is financed by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia in cooperation with the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst – DAAD), within the program of scientific and technological cooperation between the Republic of Serbia and the Federal Republic of Germany, for the period 2020-2021.
