Double Minorities in Serbia. Distinctive Aspects of the Religion and Ethnicity of the Romanians in Vojvodina
The Institute for Balkan Studies has recently published monograph of Aleksandra Djurić-Milovanović –Double Minorities in Serbia. Distinctive Aspects of the Religion and Ethnicity of the Romanians in Vojvodina.
The main focus of the book is on contemporary religious phenomenon, the emergence and development of neo-Protestant communities among Romanians in Vojvodina and changes in their religious and ethnic identity after conversion. The example of Romanian neo-Protestants as double minority in religious and ethnic categories provides a paradigmatic example for looking into the complex relationship between the key elements of identity – ethnicity, language and religion. Applying the theoretical concept of double minorities, the author intent was to indicate new possibilities in the research of multiple minority identities in Serbia. This interdisciplinary study based on the results of qualitative field research conducted in four neo-Protestant communities (Nazarenes, Adventists, Baptists, and Pentecostals) also covers methodological issues pointing to the sensitivity of the research method when it comes to ‘closed’ and marginalized communities.
