M. Čanak-Medić, D. Popović and D. Vojvodić, Manastir Žiča (Žiča Monastery), Belgrade: Republički zavod za zaštitu spomenika kulture Republike Srbije; 578 p. + 342 ill. (with an English summary).
The voluminous and richly documented monograph on the monastery of Žiča comes as the result of years of studying the monument that occupies a key place in medieval Serbian history and culture. Established in the formative period of the independent state of the Nemanjić as the dynastic coronation church and the cathedral of the autocephalous Serbian Church, Žiča was not only the sacral seat of the state but also the scene of some of the most important events of the epoch. The monograph comprehensively addresses all questions of relevance to the medieval cultural history of the monastery (D. Popović), the architecture of the katholikon and the monastic complex (M. Čanak-Medić), and the iconography and aesthetic quality of the fresco programme (D. Vojvodić). Apart from bringing new and relevant scholarly results, the monograph is amply furnished with technical material such as architectural and architectural sculpture drawings, diagrams showing the arrangement of wall paintings or transcripts of fresco inscriptions.
