Empires and Nations from the 18th to the 20th Century

Three members of the Instute for Balkan Studies, Serbian Academy Sciences and Arts, took part in the international conference Empires and Nations from the 18th to the 20th Century held 20–22 June at the Sapienza University of Rome. The contributions of Ljiljana Stošić, senior fellow: “Oriental exoticism in the Serbian art of the 18th and 19th centuries: The Balkans as a European obscure object of desire”; Sanja Lazarević Radak, research assistant: “Empire, text and shifting balkanisation: From the 19th century to the present”; and Aleksandra Kolaković, junior research assistant: “The Serbian elite and the issue of development of national culture in the late 19th century”, take a look at the relationship between imperialism and the emergence of nation-states from the perspective of three humanistic disciplines, art history, history and anthropology.
