In memoriam: Academician Mihailo Vojvodić

It is with great sadness that we inform the public that Mihailo Vojvodić, full member of SASA has passed away on March 23rd 2025, in Belgrade, at the age of 87. Academician Vojvodić was one of our most respected historians.

He taught at the Department of History at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade, where he completed all university degrees, and was elected a full professor in 1980. He served as the Head of the Department of General History of the Modern Century, Head of the Department of History (1988−1990) and Dean (1998−2000).

He was also the Scientific Secretary of the Yugoslav National Committee for Historical Sciences and the President of the Management and Scientific Councils at the University of Belgrade, the Historical Museum of Serbia and the Historical Institute of Montenegro.

He was elected a corresponding member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2009, and a full member in 2015. Within the Academy, he served as secretary of the Department of Historical Sciences (2016−2024), a member of the Committee for the Study of the Formation of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes 1914−1918, the Committee for the History of the 19th Century, the Committee for the History of the 20th Century, the Committee for the History of Serbian-Russian Relations, and the Vardar Committee. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts Fund.

As the long-time president of the Board of the Institute for Balkan Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences, Academician Vojvodić provided wholehearted and valuable support to its development.

He has received numerous awards for his scientific work, including: the Vuk Foundation Award for Science (2012), the Vladimir Ćorović Award (2012), and the Charter of the University of East Sarajevo.

As a historian of exceptional research qualities, he has addressed many important topics related to general and national history. With his scientific and pedagogical work, he has left an indelible mark on the development of our historical science.

His departure is a great loss for the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the entire Serbian society, science and culture.
