The Institute for Balkan Studies SASA and the Faculty of Philology of the University of Belgrade published a joint volume titled “Vulnerable and Endangered Languages in Europe”. The book is the result of the project “Vulnerable Languages and Language Varieties in Serbia” (VLingS), which was supported by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia within the program IDEAS (2022–2024). The editors of the volume are Annemarie Sorescu-Marinković, Principal Research Fellow of the Institute for Balkan Studies SASA, Mirjana Ćorković, Assistant Professor at the Department of Romance Studies of the Faculty of Philology, University of Belgrade, and Mirjana Mirić, Senior Research Associate of the Institute for Balkan Studies SASA. The book offers a glimpse into the mosaic of Europe’s vulnerable and endangered languages, presenting several case studies from different regions of the continent. Each chapter explores the unique challenges faced by these vulnerable and endangered languages and their speakers, highlighting diverse social, political, environmental and economic factors contributing to their decline. Overall, the chapters paint a complex picture of the sociolinguistic situation in Europe, showing that the causes of endangerment are multifaceted.

The book is open access and can be found on the website of the VLingS project
