The conference (Trans-)Formation of Identities: Orthodox Christians in the Ottoman Balkans (c.1450-c.1750) was held on October 16 and 17, 2024, in Hall 3 of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SASA) as part of the project of the same name funded by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia and led by the Institute for Balkan Studies SASA. The conference was opened by the institute’s director, Dr. Vojislav G. Pavlović, and project leader, Dr. Marija Vasiljević.
The aim of the conference was to shed light on the various ways Orthodox Christians identified themselves in this under-researched period. To highlight these layered processes and potential approaches to the topic, presentations were given not only by project participants but also by domestic and foreign researchers from various profiles and areas of interest, placing this important topic in the broader Balkan context. Fellows of the Institute for Balkan Studies SASA participated with the following presentations: research associate Dr. Marija Vasiljević – “(Re-)Thinking Identities in the Early Modern Balkans”, research associate Dr. Ognjen Krešić – “Modes of Collective Identifications of Orthodox Monks in Ottoman Documents”, and research assistant Dr. Milena Davidović – “(Trans-)Forming the Identity of Christians and Ottomans in the Marginalia of Medieval Manuscripts 1450–1750”.
