International scientific conference "Demonology as a Semiotic System"

Dr. Dragana Djurić, Ph.D., a Research Associate at the Institute for Balkan studies SASA, participated in the International scientific conference "Demonology as a Semiotic System", which was held in Moscow, 27-28. May 2024. The organizers of this conference, the eighth in a row, are the "Center of Typology and Semiotics of Folklore" (Centr tipologii i semiotiki fol’klora) and the "Center of Visual Studies of the Middle Ages and the New Age RGGU" (Centr vizualnyh issledovaniy Srednevekov'ya i Novogo vremeni RGGU) at the Russian State University for the Humanities (RGGU) in Moscow. The issues of demonology in contemporary and traditional culture, mythology, folklore, religion; the connection between church and folk demonology; construction, general and special features of demonic beings in beliefs, but also in iconography, etc were discussed in the conference.

The topic of Dr. Djurić's paper was "Who calls from the other world?" "Unclean" deceased, ghosts and demons in contemporary Serbian beliefs" (Kto yavlyaetsya s togo sveta? «Zalozhnie» pokojniki, duhi i demony v sovremennyh serbskih verovaniyah).
