Тhe book "Saints’ Cults in the Central Balkans at the Time of the Ottoman Conquests" of research associate Dr Marija Vasiljević
The Special Editions series of the Institute for Balkan Studies of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts now includes the book Saints’ Cults in the Central Balkans at the Time of the Ottoman Conquests of research associate Dr Marija Vasiljević. The subject of the book is the role of the veneration of saints in political and social life, in other words, the shaping of social reality, the fortifying of collective identity, the legitimation of power, etc. between the end of the 14th and the first third of the 16th century. The veneration of saints – the periodical renewal of the memory of their life and miracles – is interpreted as a form of collective memory. The author shows that the memory of saints could differ depending on the time and place of its recollection, i.e. that it is polyphonic, and that it can change in time.
